FALLEN CROONER
german: Der Kontrabassist und Komponist Robert Lucaciu defragmentiert in seinem Projekt „Fallen Crooner“ das eigene, (cis-)männliche Selbstverständnis und fordert die Musiker*innen Laura Totenhagen, Pascal Klewer, Shannon Barnett, Sofía Salvo und Moritz Baumgärtner zu einem lustvollen Diskurs über Geschlechterrollen auf. In einer Montage aus Eigenkompositionen Lucacius, bekannten Songs und Textsequenzen verschiedener Autor*innen. Jede*r Musiker*in darf hier die eigene Vielfalt zelebrieren und alle Nuancen, die das eigene Instrument bietet, auskosten.

english: Double bassist and composer Robert Lucaciu’s “Fallen Crooner” seeks to untangle his own (cis) male self-image. In a collaboration with musicians Laura Totenhagen, Pascal Klewer, Shannon Barnett, Sofía Salvo and Moritz Baumgärtner, the work opens up a pleasurable discourse about gender roles. Woven within a montage of Lucaciu’s own compositions and free improvisation, are recognizable songs and text sequences by various authors. Within “Fallen Crooner”, every musician is free to celebrate and enjoy the nuances offered by their own instrument.

MALSTROM

german: Das Trio aus Deutschland und der Schweiz ist ein musikalisches Kraftwerk. Es nutzt Klänge und Einflüsse aus Progressive Rock, Nu Metal und elektronischer Musik und lässt improvisatorischen Philosophie und komplexer Kompositionen in einem völlig neuen Gewand erscheinen. Der Sound der Band entsteht durch eine Mischung aus Jazz, freier Improvisation und Rockelementen der 90er Jahre. Durch das Fehlen eines Bassinstrumentes bleibt den Bandmitgliedern keine Ruhe. Die volle, manchmal brachiale Klangfassade wird durch die 8 saitige E-Gitarre, gnadenlosen Grooves und Ostinatos sowie Saxophon produziert.

english: Hailing from Germany and Switzerland, powerhouse trio Malstrom harnesses influences from progressive rock, nu metal, and electronic music to produce their full and sometimes brutal sound façade. Malstrom’s output, inspired by a mixture of ’90s jazz, free improvisation, and rock, is produced with an 8-string electric guitar, saxophone, and merciless grooves and ostinatos. Without a bass, Malstrom works overtime to create their hard-hitting sound. Both an improvisational philosophy and complex compositions underscore the trio’s distinct discography.

german: Andrea Parkins ist eine elektroakustische Musikerin, Komponistin und Klangkünstlerin, die interaktiv mit Elektronik als kompositorischen und performativen Prozess interagiert. Camila Nebbia ist eine Saxophonistin, Komponistin, Improvisatorin und Visual-Künstlerin. In ihrer Musik erkunden die beiden multidisziplinären Künstlerinnen die vielschichtigen Landschaften, die im Schnittpunkt akustischer und elektronischer Instrumente entstehen. Ihre dynamische Zusammenarbeit, die sich auf frei improvisierte Musik konzentriert, führt zu ständig wandelnden Klanglandschaften.

Camila Nebbia is a saxophone player, composer, improviser, and visual artist. german: Musikalisch changiert TAU zwischen Free-Jazz und Fusion mit Beat-lastigen Hip-Hop-Elementen – einzelne Parts erinnern an aufwendig produzierte Soundtracks. In einem kollektiven Prozess aus Komposition, Improvisation und Arrangement finden die fünf Musiker aus Berlin und Köln das Vokabular für ihre eigene Klangsprache. Es entsteht ein Sound, der an Dichte schwer zu überbieten ist: Futuristisch, virtuos und mutig!

english: Musically, TAU oscillates between free jazz and fusion with beat-heavy hip-hop elements and some moments reminiscent of lavishly produced soundtracks. In a collective process of composition, improvisation, and arrangement, the five Berlin and Cologne based musicians, find a distinct vocabulary for their own sonic language. The result is a sound pulsing with density – it’s at once futuristic, virtuosic, and courageous.

german: Ein Meltingpot von freier Improvisation und Groove, verziert mit elektronischen Elementen und Texten, die unter anderem feministische und global politische Themen fokussieren. LūX erschafft Klangwelten, die aus dem Moment heraus entstehen. Die Vielfalt der Stimme überrascht mit unerwarteten, skurrilen, filigranen und warmen Klängen. Mal puristisch mal entfremdet erzählt sie Geschichten und verschmilzt mit der facettenreichen analogen und synthetischen
Instrumentalwelt.

english: Blending free improvisation and groove, LūX create sonic environments bursting with both feminist and political meditations. Their interplay between text fragments, analog, and synthetic instrumentalization creates a world that is at once bizarre, delicate, and warm. Sometimes puristic, sometimes alienated, LūX’s output boasts a vast and unexpected spectrum of sound.

OS BARBAPAPAS

german: Wer sich immer schon gefragt hat, wie brasilianischer Tropicalismo erweitert um marokkanische Gnawa-Musik, Jazz aus Äthiopien, eine selbst gebaute Topfgitarre und eine Glasharfe klingt, sollte Os Barbapapas hören. Das Quartett aus São Paulo hat sich nach einer kultigen französischen Zeichentrickfamilie aus den 70ern benannt und hat auf Staatsakt / Fun In The Church nun bereits das zweite Album veröffentlicht: »Enigma« heißt dieses »Futter für Herz und Seele« (WDR), das aus einer anderen Galaxie gekommen zu sein scheint, um uns mit musikalischer Sonne zu bestrahlen. Outernational-Music, »einfach wohltuend in diesen Zeiten des Irrsinns« (radioeins).

english: São Paulo-based quartet Os Barbapapas trapeze the vast richness of Brazilian musical heritage and beyond. Naming themselves after a cult French cartoon family from the 70s, the collective’s members bring varied musical backgrounds to the forefront, some have travelled to Morocco to master Gnawa, others played in circuses, or were born in the heartland of samba. This multiplicity of influences informs the complex, yet breezy instrumentals heard on their latest album “Enigma” out on Staatsakt / Fun In The Church. The otherworldly record, as put by radioeins, is ‘soothing in these times of madness’.
