HORSE LORDS

Dienstag, 09.04.2024

ANDREW BERNSTEIN – saxophone, percussion, electronics
MAX EILBACHER – bass, electronics
OWEN GARDNER – guitar, electronics
SAM HABERMAN – drums

english: Horse Lords are the Pied Piper of experimental music and radical thought. Their music is unabashedly fun, and experiencing it in a live context is an experience of collective ecstasy, each body moving to its own notion of what the beat may be. That shared experience, the joy of unified flow and motion, allows the ideas typically understood as “difficult” to be more easily absorbed. By using musical forms that point towards new ways of being, thinking, and organizing, by constantly re-evaluating assumptions and compositional systems, Horse Lords provide a model for society at large. By showing just how joyous it can be to imagine new futures and possibilities, by making us dance and howl with each tectonic shift, they show how dazzling the path towards utopia could be.

Amirtha Kidambi´s Elder Ones

Samstag, 13.04.2024

AMIRTHA KIDAMBI – voice, harmonium, synthesizer, effects
MATT NELSON – soprano saxophone, effects
LESTER ST. LOUIS – bass, effects pedals
JASON NAZARY – drums, electronics
ALFREDO COLON – tenor saxophone, effects

english: Elder Ones conjures up bold improvisations and pushes the boundaries of jazz, composition and electronics. The ensemble’s instruments form a complex landscape and Kidambi’s astonishing vocals focus the compositions on themes of power, capitalism, colonialism, white supremacy and violence.
Kidambi grew up with Carnatic rhythms and devotional bhajan music as the daughter of South Indian parents. It was also around this time that she discovered Alice Coltrane and her work with Indian music. Alice and John Coltrane are pillar saints in Kidambi’s musical cosmos. But punk music, metal, hip hop and R’n’B also influenced her teenage years. If you then add choral music and classical music studies, the love of jazz and especially free jazz, then you can roughly imagine the wealth of Amirtha Kidambi’s work – which she reveals not only with Elder Ones, but also with Mary Halverson ’s Code Girl or in collaborations with avant-gardists like William Parker and Tyshawn Sorey.
