Amirtha Kidambi´s Elder Ones

german: Elder Ones zaubert kühne Improvisationen und verschiebt die Grenzen von Jazz, Komposition und Elektronik. Die Instrumente des Ensembles bilden eine komplexe Landschaft und Kidambi’s erstaunlicher Gesang konzentriert die Kompositionen auf Themen wie Macht, Kapitalismus, Kolonialismus, weiße Vorherrschaft und Gewalt.
Kidambi ist als Tochter südindischer Eltern mit karnatischen Rhythmen und devotionale Bhajan-Musik aufgewachsen. Zu jener Zeit entdeckte sie auch Alice Coltrane und ihre Arbeit mit indischer Musik. Alice und John Coltrane sind Säulenheilige in Kidambi‘s musikalischem Kosmos. Aber auch Punkmusik, Metal, Hiphop und R’n’B prägten ihre Jugend. Nimmt man dann noch die Chormusik und das klassische Musikstudium hinzu, die Liebe zum Jazz und vor allem Free Jazz, dann kann man sich ungefähr den Reichtum von Amirtha Kidambi‘s Arbeit vorstellen – den sie nicht nur mit Elder Ones offenlegt, sondern etwa auch bei Mary Halverson‘s Code Girl oder in Kollaborationen mit Avantgardisten wie William Parker und Tyshawn Sorey.

english: Elder Ones conjures up bold improvisations and pushes the boundaries of jazz, composition and electronics. The ensemble’s instruments form a complex landscape and Kidambi’s astonishing vocals focus the compositions on themes of power, capitalism, colonialism, white supremacy and violence.
Kidambi grew up with Carnatic rhythms and devotional bhajan music as the daughter of South Indian parents. It was also around this time that she discovered Alice Coltrane and her work with Indian music. Alice and John Coltrane are pillar saints in Kidambi’s musical cosmos. But punk music, metal, hip hop and R’n’B also influenced her teenage years. If you then add choral music and classical music studies, the love of jazz and especially free jazz, then you can roughly imagine the wealth of Amirtha Kidambi’s work – which she reveals not only with Elder Ones, but also with Mary Halverson ’s Code Girl or in collaborations with avant-gardists like William Parker and Tyshawn Sorey.
